A composer and lyricist (I wrote the lyrics to the legendary Bill Evans's
ballad 'Time Remembered', widely recorded), I began work on my first musical, "The Recollection of Flight," after discovering a cache of letters that my father wrote while on the Anzio beachhead during the winter of 1944. Early drafts of this play attracted a number of state and local grants, which supported a very successful workshop production in October 2002 at a 250-seat Seattle area theatre. A two-act musical, set mostly in New Jersey and Italy during World War II, it calls for a cast of 1214 men, 9 women and one boy, and is scored for jazz quartet accompaniment. Jewish themes underscore the play, which is at its essence, a love story between two New Jersey brothers who leave home for the war.
Audience response was highly positive, even emotional, and left me cautiously hopeful that this piece will have a future life on the stage.
I am currently at work on another musical, as well as the score of a ballet based on the Greek myth of Clytie and Helios.
